Can You Train Your Dog from a Dog Training DVD?

Well, everybody wants a dog that can sit, can heel and can fetch on command – who doesn’t? Unfortunately, not all people has the extra time and money a professional dog school would require. Does this mean you can’t enjoy the convenience and luxury of a trained dog? Of course not! It’s not a privilege but a necessity that one’s dog should have even the most basic dog manners taught to it. While canine schools are out of the question for most of us, there are numerous dog training DVDs made available for us to use instead.

A dog training DVD is usually created and promoted by a professional dog trainer. Owning a dog that can “sit!” when told to do so does not make you a professional trainer. The guy (or gal) usually seen on the video is most probably licensed or has graduated from an animal/veterinary school to get the required units for their chosen career. You can also Google and search for good trainers, then check if they have resources available to the public.

If you plan to buy one of these videos, ask yourself what do you want to teach your pet? If he’s starting from scratch, then find a video that will cover the basic obedience commands. If you want to get particular behavior modification pointers; then you might have to search the internet for a site that offers an extensive DVD collection. Browse through their offerings per topic and select a title that would answer your doggie training needs.

So where are the places you can look up for these instructional videos? Since there are only very few, strong video stand alone nowadays, the best place to look for these products would be the internet. Amazon will have a lot of these instructional DVDs to sell. Websites that cater specifically for dog lovers usually have a page of special offerings which include training resources. You should also click on buy and sell sites for owners who want to sell old, used training DVDs – although this is probably not the most reliable way to go about it.

Average canine training videos have prices from $20-$50; this usually depends on on how many CDs are included or what other literature it comes with. Some specialty sites will offer discounts and free gifts if you order right away. If you think that the DVD will be a much referenced tool in teaching your dog, then you should purchase it as soon as you are able. It will be worth it for sure. However, if you don’t feel like you really need a particular topic and are just lured by the great bargain, do not go off spending on that first. You may have a better thing you can get from your pet fund.

Having an obedient and trained dog need not be the most expensive item in your list. With dog training DVDs, it’s more than possible to have a great canine education for the fraction of the fee it might have cost you. You may not be able to bring Fido to a dog school – but because of innovative trainers and technology, the dog can now go to your own home.
